Coding tools are an effective way to identify how adherent someone is in applying Motivational Interviewing (MI) to a conversation. Coding will also increase awareness of your own adherence to MI and improve implementation of your skills.

During this session we will review the communication skills used in MI (open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections and summaries), and their effective use in responding to change talk. We will look at popular tools used for coding and have the opportunity to code at least one conversation as a group. Suggestions for coding your own conversations and a copy of an MI coding tool will be provided so that participants can continue after the workshop with their own self-directed learning.

To participate in this workshop, previous training and experience in Motivational Interviewing is needed. This can come from having completed the Introduction to MI, or a similar training and/or self-study and use of MI in the workplace. Please note that participants are expected to be on camera during sessions, and be able to actively engage in discussion, breakout rooms, and skills practice. Please plan accordingly, so that you can be an active participant.
